ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to examine the gray zone strategy used by China in the South China Sea Conflict and to analyze the mechanisms of the gray zone strategy. Using the existing data set on ‘South China Sea’ from 1970 to 2020, we analyze the theoretical characteristics and strategic impact of the gray zone strategy by China. We argue that the internal variable such as ‘reputation’, and the external variables such as ‘status quo dilemma’ and the ‘ambiguity of international law’ constitute a compromised gray zone strategy. These findings clarify the mechanism by which the gray zone strategy is adopted as a tool of China, providing an avenue for new research on the gray zone strategy.
