ABSTRACT

This study argues that emphasizing only the fact that North and South Korea are of the same ethnicity as the basis for unification has limitations in advancing inter-Korean relations. Instead, it explores the possibility of forming a new consensus on unification by discovering new similarities between the two Koreas. More specifically, it focuses on the natural geographic similarity in which large rivers, the Daedong River in Pyeongyang and the Han River in Seoul, run through the respective capitals. In the mid-to-late 2010s, the term “Hangang view” began to spread widely as high-end high-rise apartments were built along the Han River. The Hangang view offers an exclusive accessibility to the economically privileged, as it allows residents to look down on Seoul’s iconic natural landmark from high-rise living spaces. The social diffusion of the term reflects the public’s desire to experience and possess the Hangang view. This raises the question: is the Han River view merely a product of capitalist urbanization, or could a similar phenomenon such as a “Daedong River view” exist in the socialist city of Pyeongyang? Following an analysis of the Han River view, this study hypothesizes the potential for the formation of a Daedong River view in North Korean society, particularly focusing on the Mirae Scientists Street development along the Daedong River under Kim Jong-un’s leadership. From a comparative urban perspective, the study seeks to explore whether North Korean citizens share similar perceptions and desires to those found in South Korean society through the medium of urban space. This research goes beyond simply identifying similarities between North and South Korean societies; it holds policy significance by providing a proactive understanding of potential social conflicts and issues that could arise with the resumption of inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation and, ultimately, in a unified Korea.
