ABSTRACT

This study explores Lu Xun’s modern design practices and experiences during his studies in Japan from a design historical perspective, focusing on the intrinsic causes and development of his concept of Qiyi Congwen (棄醫從文). It examines his design ideology and the characteristics of visual elements in his book designs within a historical context. The study reveals that Qi Yizongwen was not merely a shift in career but a transformation from material-oriented (物質偏至) to culture-oriented (文化偏至) thinking, reflecting his evolving modern consciousness. During his time in Japan, Lu Xun consistently expressed this transition through both verbal and visual language. His alignment of literature and design demonstrates that from 1906 onward, his “new voice” aimed at awakening the public was not limited to literature but extended to visual arts, including design. Therefore, research on Lu Xun should not be confined to his literary contributions alone but should also consider his artistic and design-related endeavors as integral to his intellectual and cultural impact.
