ABSTRACT

Anti-government protests in Thailand have in decline since 2022. When the Move Forward Party was dissolved in 2024, it was anticipated that the frequency of protests would increase, similar to the dissolution of the Future Forward Party in 2020. However, this did not occur. Why did the dissolution of the Move Forward Party fail to trigger a surge in protests, unlike the case of the Future Forward Party? To address this issue, this study conducts in-depth interviews with ten individuals aged 19 to 34 who either participated in protests or played leading roles in protest movements between 2020 and 2022. It examines the differences in how protesters perceive the Future Forward Party, the Move Forward Party, and the recently re-established People’s Party, and analyzes the factors that have led to a decline in their participation in protests. According to the activists interviewed, the primary reason for the decline was that the Move Forward Party did not take on a leadership role in mobilizing protests, unlike the Future Forward Party, despite the impact of the use of legal repression and people’s return to economic activities in post-COVID-19 society.
