AB - Recent Thailand-Cambodia border disputes and the scam industry have garnered major attention from the international community, revealing not- so-secret connections between criminal activities and domestic politics in Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. This article analyzes the complex history and politics of the ‘Golden Triangle’ (Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos) and the ‘Emerald Triangle’ (Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia) using the framework of Carl Von Clausewitz’ s “paradoxical trinity.” After a brief survey of the history of the formation and development of the two triangles, the study proceeds to examine ultranationalism in the people ignited and expanded by irredentist movements, the military’s use of the underground economy to sustain their power in the border regions, and the rhetorical politics of the governments during the security crises from the colonial period to the digital age. Building on the analysis, the conclusion part highlights the role of politics above the trinity of the people, the military, and the government in perpetuating the conflicts and crimes in the overlapping border areas.
