ABSTRACT

This paper makes rough discuss on cultural connotation and symbolism of chrysanthemum, plum flower, lotus and Chinese trumpet creeper in Chinese culture. Ⅰ. Chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemum is recluse in flowers. Chrysanthemum is the incarnation of nobility in Chinese culture. In Chinese culture, chrysanthemum is closely related with the two celebrities as symbol of noble personality. These two celebrities are Qu Yuan (屈原) and Tao Yuanming(陶渊明). Chinese people give the wild chrysanthemum more typical noble quality. In Chinese culture, chrysanthemum has close connection with homesickness. Ⅱ. Plum flower: Plum flower is like upright person. In Chinese culture, plum flower and chrysanthemum have similar symbolism. Plum flower is aloof and upright. Ⅲ. Lotus: Lotus is gentleman in flowers. In Chinese culture, lotus is like incorruptible and honest person. In China, lotus has also connection with the Buddhist culture. Ⅳ. Chinese trumpet creeper: Chinese trumpet creeper is like snob.
