Welfare Thoughts of Johann Hinrich Wichern from a Social-Ethical Perspective

In this article I have analyzed and evaluated from a social-ethical perspective the welfare thought of Johann Hinrich Wichern (1808-1881), who has exercised a huge influence on the German Inner Mission in shaping its theological and practical foundation. Through such activities he could save his nation and people from the social problems of the 19th century, which came from the heart of the so-called Manchester capitalism.In the first and the second chapter I have looked into how he has accepted traditional heritages of the Reformation and the pietism, which helped him to articulate his specific diaconate theology and to contribute to organizing many diaconate associations for neighbor’s love. In the third chapter I have analyzed the purpose and tasks of the German Inner Mission, which were elaborated thoroughly in the program paper of Wichern in 1849. I have paid attention to the following: In struggle against the social problems and aggressive communism he has endeavored to keep the family as God’s basic order from destruction and deterioration. He has thought that church and state should play their own role in protecting the poor and the marginalized. He has acknowledged the necessity of the ambulant help, but put more emphasis on self-reliance and self-help of those who were at the edge of the society.For me it is interesting that Wichern has made efforts to articulate social policies from the Christian responsibility in the 1870’s, when Germany marched the way to the social state. In this respect, he has suggested a good model of social diaconate.In the last step I would say that Wichern’s model of associate diaconate, church and social diaconate are very suggestive for Korean churches, which would contribute in their own ways to shaping the welfare state. I appreciate the thought of Wichern that the underprivileged should stand on their own feet and show their ability for self-reliance and self-help.

A Study on the social ethics and the relation Between Church and State in the Social Participation of Conservative Group in Korean Protestant Church

The purpose of this dissertation is to study the relation between Church and State in the social participation of Conservative Group in Korean Protestant Church from 1960 to 1987. Because of the lack of political theology, Korean Protestant Church shows the theological differences in the relation between Church and State, and also act the diverse practices in the social participation. In this period, On the one hand Progressive Group devoted to democratization and human dignity Movements, On the other hand Conservative Group devoted to evangelization, asserting the separation between Church and State. This opposition between Progressive Group and Conservative Group basically originated from the differences of perspective on the relation between church and state. This dissertation primarily aims at a study about the social participation of the Conservative Group in Korea Protestant Church. Therefore, this dissertation is historically to study the social participation of Korean Protestant Church, and then theologically to analyze the relation between church and state in Korean Protestant Church. Conservative Group negatively saw the social participation of christian, asserting the separation between church and state. The Korean Presidential breakfast Prayer Meeting is representative to the social participation of a fundamental and conservative Group during these days. According to my study, the relation between church and state of the fundamental and conservative Group is the separation between church and state founded by the fundamentalism and Anti-Communsim that made in the theological and historical situation of Korea since the 1945. And also, Hulmut Thielicke asserted that Luther's two kingdoms has misuses of dual ethics, a dangerousness of secularization, and a tendency of obedience to an authority of government. Korean Church's Contructing Ethic for Civil Society and its Missions

The purpose of this paper is to pay attention to that Korean christianity had an immanent spirits of social ethic originally and to reflect the reason why we have lost the radical legacy. In such case, it is believed that we could recover our credences in korean society and be capable of realizing the mission of transforming the world globalized by the capital depending on the view of God's will. On the basis of such a purpose, firstly, this researcher insists that korean church criticize its own faults and crimes which it did in our history during the time colonialized by Japan and ruled by some korean dictators, including theological and sociological ignorance. Secondly, we try to pursue the construction of christian ethic for civil society, depending on Walzer's the concept of `complex equality'. In formal terms, complex equality means that no citizen's standing in one sphere or with regard to one social good can be undercut by his standing in some other sphere, with regard to some other good. Thus, citizen A may be chosen over citizen B for political office, and then the two of them will be unequal in the sphere of politics. But they will not be unequal generally so long as A's office gives him no advantage over B in any other sphere. To achieve a situation of complex equality, Walzer proposes a system of blocked exchanges: it should be avoided that goods obtained in one sphere are exchanged to obtain goods in another sphere. For instance, the money person has acquired in the economic sphere should not be used to `buy' power and influence in the political sphere. This system of complex equality will lead to a more egalitarian distribution of social goods. Maybe in each sphere distinct inequalities will persist, but given the plurality of spheres, eventually every person will acquire goods in one sphere or another. This line of reasoning reminds us to some extent of constructing ethic and realizing justice for civil society. Finally, we suggest the missions of responsibility for civil society, both locally and globally.

Beyond Dialogue to Convivienz

This study presented convivienz that combines even up the dimension of life, with paying attention to a matter that a dialogue between religions stops at declaration. The purpose of this study is to show one alternative plan in which convivienz can be applied very usefully at a point that a dialogue is regarded as impossible. The relationship between Christianity and other religions is generally classified into exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism. By the way, these arguments are just the controversy within Christian religion. Also, a dialogue between other religions, which these people emphasize, simply stops in declaring a virtual norm as a whole. A dialogue between Christianity and other religions needs to be practically performed at a place of life. Also, this meeting needs to be spread in the total ground such as academic, theological, spiritual, and life dialogue. As such overall ground, this study introduces Conviviez that is presented by T. Sundermeier. Convivienz is explained together with two concepts called ‘Convivialidad’ and ‘conviviencia.’ Convivienz is a word that means small community of the vulgar herd in South America based on the emotion of Convivialidad. This place is space that is formed with meeting, dialogue, learning, and festival. By the way, conviviecia, and convivienz as experience of communal life, which is placed on its origin, can persuasively combine theory and practice aiming at existence with other religions. Namely, that is because convivienz is completed through learning, assistance, and feast as well as dialogue. T. Sundermeier sees that Convivienz is possibly realized by small local churches in modern times. This study puts forward Stanley Johns as one model that realized the spirit of convivienz at the missionary field. He showed one model in missionary work through dialogue and community in India.

A Study on the Excellence of the Christian Colleges in Korea

This article aims to investigate the relationship between the excellence of the Christian colleges and socio-political leadership in Korea. In the past the Christian colleges played a major role in the development of the Korean society and churches. This comes from the excellence of the Christian colleges. The excellence of the Christian colleges in Korea consisted of four elements: uniqueness of Christian educational ideology, excellence of scholarship, excellence of morality, and difference from secular culture. The Christian colleges early stage in their history maintained strongly their Christian educational idea. If it seemed to impossible to hold this idea against the Japanese colonial government, they decided to close the colleges, as shown in the case of Soongsil college in 1938. However, in these days, the Christian educational idea replaced with the unreflected educational idea like as globalization and information literacy. Secondly, The Christian colleges in the past showed their academic excellence in the introduction of the western modern academic discipline to the Korean society. However, the Christian colleges in the present has been lost their academic excellence except some distinguished colleges. Many of them are called as 'second-class' or 'third-class' colleges. Thirdly, the Christian colleges in the past demonstrated their moral excellence in the extra curricular activities in the field of rural and suburb of urban community. This made them to take the good reputation from the outside of campus. Lastly, the Christian colleges in the past showed their difference in the new Christian way of life from secular colleges. They were heralds of the Good News as well as bringer of the civilized way of life. However, in the present, it is very hard to find the cultural difference between Christian colleges and secular ones. This gloomy realities challenge the Christian colleges to reflect themselves to retake their leadership in the society through recovering the excellence of scholarship, morality and culture.
