ABSTRACT

This paper proposes that the Korean church become a public church as a condition for church revival in a crisis situation. The crisis in the Korean church is being captured in various contexts, but it can ultimately be said to be a crisis of publicness. At the same time, globally, people still need religion in the so-called post-secular era. Additionally, sociologists such as Habermas, Casanova, and Hunter say that a revival of religion is possible when the church plays a public role in social change. Accordingly, this study proposes that the tasks of the Korean church are (1) a church that pursues the common good, (2) the sovereignty of God that must be applied in the realm of common grace, (3) a church that seeks to form an ‘institution’ for all, and (4) a church that provides a sense of ‘transcendence.’
