ABSTRACT

In Yeoyudangjeonseo (與猶堂全書), the term ‘Gyowoo (交友)’ appears six times. It is found twice in Sohakjugwan (小學珠串, 1810), twice in Noneogogeumju (論語古今注, 1813), and once each in Daehakgongui (大學公議, 1814) and Maengjayoi (孟子要義, 1814). Except for Sohakjugwan, Tasan (茶山) uses the term ‘Gyowoo’ only in his interpretations of the Four Books (四書), excluding Joongyong (中庸). In this writing, first, by comparing the contents of rule (社約) from the Juklansisa (竹欄詩社) and Gyowooron (交友論) in terms of ‘virtue (德)’ and ‘righteousness (義理),’ we can practically verify Tasan’s perspective on friendship. Then, through an analysis of the content related to ‘Gyowo’ mentioned in Tasan’s interpretations of the Four Books, it is evident that Tasan, beyond presenting the benefits and drawbacks or the virtue and propriety of friendship as outlined in “Gyowooron”, advocates for the friendship of ‘sincerity (誠意).’ This is confirmed through examples of ‘Gyowoo’presented in Tasan’s interpretations of the Four Books.
