ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is giving various pictures of Jangbi who is a historical character in Samgukji(The History of the Three Kingdoms), Jeokbyeokga(The Song of Red Cliff) and so on. One of the most notable shape of Jangbi is not only a rough and hot tempered hero, but also a person with humane flaws. This ambivalence is clearly found in Chinese literature as we can see in official history Samgukji in which wise Jangbi is depicted as a resourceful and extemporaneous person. However, this sort of Jangbi’s shape is changed to the human with flaws and hot tempered when this character is described in soseol(novel), seulhwa(folktale), and sokdam(proverb). This would be the reason Jangbi is beloved by commoner among the heroes in Samgukji yeonui(The Romance of the Three Kingdoms). The feature of shapes of Jang-bi described in Korean literature seems not very different from the shape in Chinese literature. It can be categorized as you can see below. 1) The shape of Jangbi who is rough and impetuous. 2) The shape of Jangbi who represents the brave. 3) The shape of Jangbi who is a corrector or saviour. 4) The shape of Jangbi who becomes the deity. The interesting part is that though there are lots of literary pieces like soseol or sijo(short lyric songs) that depict Jegalkongmyeong(제갈공명), in proverb Jangbi is found many times. It means commoners are familiar with Jangbi than any other character.
