ABSTRACT

Yoonji Son (2021), A Study on the translation of the intimacy markers “Tu” and“Vous” in French into Korean: The case of Le Petit Prince. Le Petit Prince written bySaint-Exupéry is one of the most translated French novels in Korea. The maincharacter, the little prince, visits various planets and has a conversation with peopleliving on each planet. This study is aimed at examining the meanings of “Tu” and“Vous” that the main character uses differently depending on emotional intimacy withhis interlocutors and analysing how it was translated in six different translatedversions published in Korea. French second-person pronouns “Tu” and “Vous” areindicators of the second-person, but they can be also used to represent the intimacybetween interlocutors. On the other hand, Korean second-person pronouns are notdirectly connected to intimacy. When “Tu” and “Vous” are translated into Korean, the intimacy implied in the original language is expressed by using the honorificmarkers or normal words. (Ewha Womans University, Korea)
