ABSTRACT

Legal interpretation is no simple matter, and the additional layer of foreign language further complicates the equation. Linguists are often intimidated by the prospect of accessing legal mind and concept, while lawyers take it as a challenge to communicate legal ideas in another language. To fill their distinctive knowledge gaps, it is essential to take a differential approach in teaching legal translation to these disparate segments of learners. This article explores the different strategies adopted in teaching legal translation to students enrolled in the master's degree program at Ewha Womans University Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, and those enrolled in the non-degree, legal translation certificate course run by the Ewha Research Institute for Translation Studies. On that basis, this article proposes teaching styles calibrated to the unique needs and objectives of the respective student segments. For master's degree students, focus should be on acclimating them to the legal field and enabling them to produce legal translation acceptable to the legal profession. For the non-degree, certificate course students, who most likely already had exposure to legal communication issues, focus should be on a more pragmatic tutorial on effective ways to convey their legal expertise in another language.
