ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine whether integrated activities using the five senses are effective in promoting creativity of young children. The subjects of this study were two classes of five-year-old children in an institution in Gwacheon. In the experimental group, integrated activities using the five senses were carried out, and in the control group, the Nuri Curriculum was implemented. The experiment was conducted during Oct. 10~Nov. 16, 2017, for a total of 12 sessions over 6 weeks. In order to investigate the improvement of creativity in young children, K-ICT (Integrated Creativity Test) by Lee K. H.(2014) was used as pre and post test. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, integrated activities using the five senses were effective in improving language creativity(flexibility, fluency, and originality). Secondly, integrated activities using the five senses were effective in improving figure creativity(addition of new elements, subject, and the overall area of figures). However, impacts on continuity and connectivity, completeness, and unconventionalism of figure creativity were not proven to be effective. Thirdly, integrated activities using the five senses are effective in promoting a creative personality(curiosity, independence, adventure, task attachment, and total creative personality). Finally, effectiveness in promoting integrated creativity was identified. These findings suggest that integrated activities using the five senses are effective in promoting the creativity of young children. Therefore, children's creativity can be developed and promoted if the children participate in play activities that utilize the five senses and blend various methods regardless of theme.
