ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to define the concept of parenting philosophy and to explore the theoretical ground for suggesting the direction of Korean parenting philosophy. As a result, parenting philosophy meant how parenting factors, such as the view of the human development and the children, parenting values, parenting beliefs and parent-child relationships leading parents to support their children's cognitive, emotional, physical and social development, were established. Namely, parenting philosophy was defined as a meta-organization consisting of the recognition and value systems of the parent's overall rearing. Meanwhile, after exploring reality analysis and theoretical grounds, a direction was proposed as follows: First, it suggested that self-realization and democratic parenting philosophy with regard to the attitude of children's lives was warranted. Second, the parenting philosophy of the subjective formation of cognitive schema and the social and cultural interaction with regard to cognitive development was suggested. Third, the parenting philosophy of social support and social interest with regard to children's social relationships was suggested. The proposed direction was believed to help Korean parents reflect on competitive and realistic parenting and encouraged parents to have the right parenting attitude and behavior in order to nurture future generations.
