ABSTRACT

Most of the contents in the novel are highly likely to be based on the author’s experiences of the time when the novel was created. It can be also said that the contents of the novel show the actual aspects of the author’s time. The various hairstyles which appear in Chunhyangjeon represents the actual hairstyles of the time. If a researcher specialized in studying hairstyles of the late Joseon Dynasty wants to examine the hairstyles of the early 19th century, Chunhyangjeon will be the essential material that one should look into. I have annotated and published several versions of Chunhyangjeon, but the exact meaning of the ‘heoteunmeoli’ and ‘sayangmeoli’, a certain female hairstyle which appears in this novel was never clear. In this article, I examined several materials, including ‘Gachesingeumsamog(加鸴申禁事目 Regulations repeatedly banning the addition of wigs)’, to specify those two hairstyles. Although I could not clarify actual details of ‘heoteunmeoli’, I discovered that ‘sayangmeoli’ was a diff erent hairstyle from how it is described in today.
