ABSTRACT

This study aims to review and summarize interpretation of Jeong Yak-yong on the changes in hairstyle and the Gwan-geon(冠巾) in So-ryeom process(小斂) during the funeral rites, and on the Su-bok process (受服), changing to light mourning clothes, after the Jol-gok(卒哭). In the So-ryeom process, preparation to wear mourning clothes is conducted, while the hairstyle and the Gwan-geon(冠巾) are changed. Pi-bal(被髮) refers to loosening the hair and letting it hang down on both sides, and Gwal-bal(括髮) refers to tying the hair. Th e Mun(免) is an object worn on the head, and it is suggested to wear Hyo-geon(孝巾) instead of the Mun (免) on top of the Gwal-bal(括髮). After the Jol-gok(卒哭), the clothes are changed to light mourning clothes, which is made with differentiation in the multiplier of the strands of hemp cloth, and Su-jil(首絰), Yo-jil(腰絰) and Hyo-dae(絞帶) are found to diff er in its material and thickness. Th e wives get to finish the rites wearing the firstly given mourning clothes. Jeong Yak-yong investigated the mourning clothes system adhering to the principles he had established and attempted to restore the ancestral rites. When it was difficult to restore the funeral rite, he attempted to reflect the customs of the times of Tang-Song dynasty and Joseon dynasty , and demonstrated the mourning clothes worn during the funeral rite in detail by making eff orts to facilitate the funeral rite smoothly.
