A Study on Dasan Jeong Yak-Yong’s Reformative Moral Philosophy System

This thesis aims to investigate Dasan Jeong Yak-Yong’s Reformative Moral Philosophy System. Dasan Jeong Yak-yong  lived through the reigns of King Jeongjo and Sunjo, from the 38th year of King Yeongjo to the 2nd year of King Heonjong, a period of political, social and ideological disorder and extreme partisan fi ghting. Dasan found the core cause of the crisis so serious that the people died and the country collapsed in Juja Neo-Confucianism and Li-Ki(理氣)-theory, which were the ideologies of doctrinal order and governance in society at the time. Dasan criticized the fundamental principles of inactivity and Li-Ki(理氣)-theory, declared that Neo-Confucianism was incompatible with the original Confucianism, and insisted that the pure teaching of Confucius and Mencius should be reestablished in its place. Dasan fi rst rearranged the Confucian Gyeonghak system and expanded it into the Six Classics system by adding the three classics of Spring and Autumn, Ye, and Ak to the Four books and the Th ree Classics system that was in use at the time. His study of Chinese classics means a detailed interpretation and extensive commentary on the whole Six Classics and the Four books. Dasan understood Jiin and Anmin as the two pillars of Gyeongsaehak. Jiin is to appoint talented people to the right place according to ability, and Anmin is to enrich the lives of the people. If these two things are practiced, it can be said that the main task of government is completed. In his system of moral philosophy, Gyeonghak, Yehak, and Gyeongsehak are inseparable from each other because they all contain the contents for self-cultivation and governance at the same time. As can be seen from the fact that the original name of 『Gyeongseiyupyo』 is 『Bangryechobon』, Gyeongseihak is both Yehak and Gyeonghak, and even in the case of 『Heumheumsinseo』, Gyeongseihak is no diff erent from Yehak . Th erefore, in this paper, Dasan’s studies are broadly divided into Gyeonghak and Gyeongsehak, and we try to understand Dasan’s reformative moral philosophy.

Problematizing Confucian Intellectual : Topography of Modern Confucian Intellectual Studies and Exploring Scalability

The purpose of this article is to review the trends and achievements in the study of modern Confucian intellectuals in order to reconsider the status and role of the ‘the Traditional’ in modern history, and to explore the possibilities of expanding this field. To this end, I analyze the relevant studies by dividing them into two main categories. The first is the area related to how Confucian intellectuals appropriated modernity and reconstructed the ‘the Traditional’ as they became marginalized. Here, we examined studies that dealt with the interrelationship between ‘the Traditional’ and modern knowledge, as well as papers that dealt with changes in the way Confucian intellectuals relate to society. It was argued that in studying the intellectual activities of Confucian intellectuals, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the content of texts but also to changes in form, and it is also necessary to study social networks and various types of social organizations, meetings, and gatherings to identify the changed social relations of Confucian intellectuals. Th e second area is related to the hybridity of ‘the Traditional’ and modernity found in the daily lives of Confucian intellectuals. In this section, I categorized the daily lives of Confucian intellectuals into households/families, women, and professions, and reviewed previous studies in this area. Th rough this, I emphasized that the way hybridization functions and the process of operation is always carried out in the context of hierarchy, power and authority, race, and economic inequality between different cultures. Therefore, for the study of hybridity, it is necessary to trace the various strategies of Confucian intellectuals in the process of hybridization between the ‘the Traditional’ and the modern, and to pay attention to the micro-level power relations. It is hoped that the study of Confucian intellectuals will be expanded in the future, and the concepts and logic will be refined to discuss the power relations of socio-cultural practices surrounding ‘the Traditional’ in modern history, that is, the politics of ‘the Traditional’.

The Cine-poetic Features in Kim Jong Sam's Poetry and their meaning

This paper examines the cine-poetic features in Kim Jong-sam's poetry and their meaning, focusing on montage, a cinematic technique. Th e contemplative and discontinuous images in his poems are in contact with cine-poetic features. Cine-poem, centered on the presentation of images that occur in a place where internal feelings and external objects meet delicately and intimately, is eventually operated by arranging images. For this discussion, we looked at Kim Jong-sam’s poems, which were closely related to the montage technique of the film. Movies and poetry show a similar structure in that they utilize a technique that juxtaposes images. It is possible that “editing” is connected with the overall shape of the poem, and “collage” is connected with the arrangement of lines and stanzas, which is effective in creating dramatic composition and tension. Kim Jong-sam’s poem actively utilized the techniques of contrast and ellipsis through these montage. In the “Twelve-scale Flight of Steps” and “Wrinkled Marble,” they concentrated on maximizing the wavelength of the image and implicitly conveying the meaning of the landscape through sudden collisions of the image. In the “Auschwitz” series, the effects of “contrast” and “surprise” were brought through screen division and close-up techniques. Th ere are also “Cheyenne” poems that seek a way to imply a tragic fate that involves loss and wandering due to death by cross-editing the parallels of past and present or two events. Th e connection and overlap of these images or events are in line with Cine-poem pursued by Kim Jong-sam. He tried to capture images that contained the overlapping of various curves of life and the “wrinkle of time,” and delicately utilized the movie’s montage technique to effectively express it. If such a montage is defined in a word, it can be called “ironic montage.” This is related to Kim Jong-sam’s attitude to writing poetry, which seeks the effect of minimizing the referentiality of language and maximizing the uncertainty of meaning.

This study historically analyzes the origins and use of the Wisuryeong(garrison decree) to mobilize the military to suppress protests in modern Korean history. Promulgated as Presidential Decree No. 296 on March 27, 1950, the Wisuryeong was modeled after the Japanese Meiji era’s Wisuryeong. The ordinance was originally enacted to take over the local defense functions of the existing jintai system when the jintai system was abolished and the division system was implemented, and reflected the situation where the jintai played a role in maintaining local security, guarding military facilities, and monitoring military aircraft due to the absence of gendarmes and the lack of a police force in the process of establishing governmental subdivisions after the Meiji Restoration. Th e Syngman Rhee government had enacted and promulgated the ordinance, which was modeled after the Japanese Wisuryeong, in order to intervene in public security and monitor military fl ags in a situation of political turmoil and military expansion after the Yeosun incident. However, during the Korean War, Wisuryeong was largely abandoned, as the Korean War front frequently shifted and martial law was declared at all times, making it diffi cult to enforce Wisuryeong, which stipulated military security in certain areas. Furthermore, after the armistice, the South Korean army was reorganized into 20 divisions, and rear-guard duties were assigned to the Military District Command and Reserve Divisions under the Second Army. As a result, the Wisu Order was largely forgotten. In 1965, Park Chung-hee’s government, faced with opposition to the signing and ratifi cation of the Korea-Japan Agreement, invoked the “forgotten” Wisuryeong as an alternative to declaring martial law. Worried about the political fallout of declaring martial law again a year after the June 3 Incident, Park sought to mobilize the military in a non-martial law manner. Wisuryeong was convenient to use because it provided for the use of arms and the right to arrest, and most importantly, it provided that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Command, the main protest suppression force in Seoul, became the Wisuryeong Command and could command fi eld units mobilized from the forward areas.

During the late 18th to mid-19th centuries, the concept of ‘fluid musical compositions’ within Song-book was not an anomaly but rather a common phenomenon. Th ese ‘fl uid musical compositions’ were not fi rmly established as specifi c pieces of music at the time of compilation, resulting in significant variations or encompassing multiple compositions. The term was later mainly associated with derivatives of the ‘Isakdaeyeop’ such as ‘Junggeo’, ‘Dugeo’, and ‘Pyunggeo’. These ‘fluid musical compositions’ were prevalent in Significance of the ‘Fluid Musical Composition’(‘Bujo’) in the Nasonbon Gasa and the Hangul Museum Edition Yulbo from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, refl ecting the dynamic nature of performance scenes. Th is article explores the transmission process of the ‘fl uid musical composition’ called ‘Bujo’ in both the Nasonbon and Hangul Museum editions of the same genre, using it as evidence that such compositions were not anomalies but rather universal occurrences. Th e late 18th to mid-19th centuries experienced more dynamic musical changes compared to preceding periods, leading to the appearance of ‘fluid musical compositions’ that wouldn't be found in other eras. Understanding these compositions properly allows for a more accurate understanding of the court music collections from this period. The presence of ‘fluid musical compositions’ signifi es that the compilers of these Song-book were already attuned to ongoing musical changes and captured the most sensitive aspects of those changes. By supplementing the existing examples of ‘fl uid musical compositions’ found in works like the Byeongwagakokjip, Heungbibu, DonggukGasa, Yeongeon with the inclusion of these two Song-books, the Nasonbon Gasa and the Hangul Museum edition Yulbo this paper seeks to contribute to establishing that ‘fl uid musical compositions’ were a prevalent phenomenon of the 19th century. The significance of this paper lies in proving the likelihood that the ‘fluid musical compositions’ found in court music collections from the late 18th to mid-19th centuries were not anomalies but rather indicative of a common trait.
