ABSTRACT

On August 15, 1945, the Korean Peninsula became the center of the international cold war, and the issue of determining the national identity of a country unfolded an extreme political situation. In the end, as sporadic local wars take place in the two Koreas, long and complex police and South Korean forces’ anti-partisan operations take place in the Honam region. Th e Southwest District Combat Police Force was composed of its combat unit and the frontline police station unit in the operating area, and carried out a solo operation fi rst from May to September 1953. During this period, many important partisans were killed or captured, and it can be seen that the criminal record of the frontline police unit was better than that of the Southwest District Combat Police Unit. Even after Lee Hyun-sang was killed in the Jirisan Mountain area in September 1953, the Park Combat Command was launched in Namwon and continued its operation by integrating the Southwest District Combat Police Force. An analysis of important partisans killed, captured, and defected in the process shows that the Southwest District Combat Police Force conducted much more joint operations with the Park Combat Command, which has strong fi repower, than when it was alone in suppressing the partisans. Even after a ceasefi re agreement was in place, battles in the Honam region continued for a long time between the police the National Army, and the partisan. I hope that more detailed data will be discovered and released in the future to clearly illuminate the modern history of Korea, so that the history of tragedy will not be repeated again.
