ABSTRACT

This article traced the historical foundation of Korean social citizenship based on Marshall’s theory of citizenship. If we pay attention to the civic and political elements of political citizenship and the concept of social citizenship that are compatible with modern capitalism as the foundation of social citizenship that is often overlooked even though it forms an important context in Marshall’s discussion of citizenship, we can understand our mutual aid traditions such as Hyangyak, Gye, and Dure as social citizenship concepts.
