ABSTRACT

This study tried to read Isaac Asimov’s collection of novels, I, Robot, as a posthuman discourse. The posthuman discourse allows us to revisit marginalized beings who were not bound by the category of ‘human beings’. In I, Robot, there are points that preempt the problem consciousness of the posthuman discourse, which requires attention. This paper deals with the problem of “bias” surrounding humans and robots, the aspect of “crossing” between humans and non-humans, and the imagination of “communities” beyond science fiction, and explores the current meaning of I, Robot in literature. The posthuman discourse presents a hybrid and nomadic concept of subject, pointing out that the conceptual boundary of human beings is not clear. I, Robot constantly ask the question of what kind of subject humans or robots are by cracking on various prejudices surrounding humans and robots. Posthuman’s horizontal ontology shows that the relationship between humans and robots is by no means simple. In this regard, I, Robot can besaid to betexts that show the possibility of crossing between humans and robots. SF is a genre that can portray the infinite image of the community that we should aim for. Having to coexist with humans as well as non-humans, we need to acknowledge that the beings living in this world are not one and not the same. I, Robot should be read more diversely as a literary text that asks the questions we need as welivein the posthuman era.
