ABSTRACT

The Korean language test items for civil service recruitment lack compatibility with Korean language-related questions found in the recruitment tests of public or private enterprises. The decisive reason for this lack of compatibility lies in the assessment of practical literacy skills required for job performance. While recruitment tests for public or private enterprises evaluate practical literacy skills, the Korean language test for civil service recruitment does not. Considering that practical literacy skills are evaluated as important competencies in modern times, it is desirable to improve the Korean language test for civil service recruitment into an assessment of practical literacy skills. To achieve this improvement, it is necessary to first avoid questions that assess language knowledge such as grammar rules or Chinese character usage. Additionally, there is a need to minimize vocabulary assessment questions. This aligns with the direction of recruitment test design for public or private enterprises. Secondly, the number of questions assessing understanding abilities should be reduced, and instead, the weight of questions assessing inference and critical thinking abilities should be increased. Practical literacy involves the ability to infer and think critically based on an understanding of the content of a text. To facilitate this improvement, it is advisable to refer to the Language and Logic section of the Public Service Aptitude Test, which already assesses practical literacy skills. Through this approach, by developing appropriate questions, it should be possibleto transform the Korean language section of civil service recruitment exam into onethatevaluates practical literacy skills.
