AB - This study has thefollowing threesignificances.
First, it is an accurate translation of Geummun-Samok. Several documents from the reigns of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo partially contain the contents of Geummun-Samok, and by referring to them, you can find the translated portions of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Yeongjo and Jeongjo. However, the prohibition regulations specifically set by King Jeongjo have not been translated, and there are mistakes in the existing translations.
The contents translated in Chapter 2 of this article can be used in thestudy of Geummun-Samok.
Second, it is necessary to treat Geummun-Samok as a research topic. When you search for Geummun-Samok on RISS, there is only one master’s thesis. Since this thesis also deals briefly with the Geummun-Samok, it does not deal with the Geummun-Samokas its subject. It is a very important issue that the general public could not use patterned silk(Mundan) during the reigns of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo. It is strange that academia has no interest in this issue.
Geummun-Samok can be a keyword to understand the late Joseon Dynasty.
Third, Geummun-Samok came about as an extension of King Yeongjo’s policy of banning patterned silk, and King Jeongjo hoped that this policy would continue in the future. However, in the 19th century, theregulations prohibiting patterned silk became nominal.
If we look at silk-related content in songs or novels, we can see that the 18th century rule banning patterned silk is no longer in effect.
