ABSTRACT

This paper explores the methods of criticism and counterargument shown in the utterances of the characters in <Hwangreung Monghwangi>, the late Joseon Dynasty’s dream novel, and reveals that the methods are in contact with the narrative techniques and aesthetics of family novels. <Hwangreung Monghwangi> Previous studies focused on changes within the series of novels or Dream Journey, and women’s consciousness, but did not explore direct relationships with family novels. As a result of exploring the connection, an aspect of Gyeam’s criticism that was oriented towards relationships emerged, and this was in line with the relationships of family novels. In addition, the parts where Sangbi and Joobi give counterarguments are filled with stories about family and clan, such as alienation from in-laws, separation from family, death of children, and childlessness, which suggests that this was influenced by the narrative techniques of family novels. This part was difficult to find in the existing dreamy rock genre. This work was created through an appropriate combination of the dream tour technique and the family novel technique. In conclusion, <Hwangreung Monghwangi> is the result of women who enjoyed family novels internalizing the technique and gradually moving to dreamy romance, and its significance in the history of novels can be evaluated as the only work among dreamyurok works so far that is directly linked to family novels.
