ABSTRACT

Dōshō is from the Fune-shi(船氏), a descendant of Wangji ni(王辰爾), who came from Baekje. Through studying abroad at the Tang Dynasty, he learned the Beopsang Buddhism(法相宗) and Zen Buddhism(禪法) from the Buddhist monk Xuanzan. After returning from China, Dōshō taught teaching Buddhism and performed Zen Buddhism at Gangō-ji, Outside the temple, we tried to improve living conditions for the public. The reason why Dōshō was able to stably carry out large-scale relief projects such as developing wells, preparing ships, and building bridges for a decade was because of the support of the the Fune-shi. In recognition of his contribution, he was first appointed to the post of Dai-sōzu(大僧都) in his later years, and Dōshō ‘s social relief activities were later succeeded to his disciple Gyoki.
