ABSTRACT

This study examines the creation and dissemination of internet memes in South Korea, emphasizing the importance of their critical reception. It distinguishes Richard Dawkins’ concept of “meme” from the contemporary notion of internet memes, tracing the evolution of domestic internet memes from the early “jjalbang” image memes on DC Inside to multimedia memes on platforms like YouTube and short-form content. The analysis underscores the dual nature of internet memes. On the positive side, they foster community identity and encourage innovative practices through participatory culture. However, they also propagate provocative content indiscriminately, trivialize significant social phenomena, and encourage superficial communication. To mitigate these negative effects and promote the constructive development of meme culture, this study stresses the need for critical engagement from both producers and consumers. It is imperative to approach meme culture with informed understanding, fostering its growth into a meaningful cultural phenomenon.
