AB - This study aims to enhance advanced Korean language learners’ sociolinguistic competence by analyzing how speech styles banmal (informal speech) and jondaetmal (honorific speech)are strategically used in discourse contexts, and by proposing a pedagogical model for teaching honorific expressions. Current Korean language education primarily presents speech levels within the framework of grammatical rules and formality distinctions, often failing to address actual discourse situations that involve complex social relationships and speakers’ strategic intentions.
In response, this study analyzes the dialogues of the film “Inside Men” to examine how banmal and jondaetmal function in specific discourse contexts. The analysis reveals that these speech styles serve as strategic tools for asserting authority, managing social distance, delivering threats or persuasion, and expressing emotions, rather than simply reflecting fixed hierarchical relationships. Based on Judd’s model for teaching pragmatic competence, this study proposes a five-stage instructional model “Presentation Observation & Understanding-Reception & Integration Practice-Application” using film as a pedagogical tool. This approach offers an educational method that goes beyond grammatical instruction by fostering Korean language learners’ ability to make context-sensitive language choices and expanding their awareness of sociocultural contexts and nuances of communication.
