ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the articulatory phonetic characteristics of [e, ɛ, ɨ, ə] monophthong vowels in the Samcheok and Uljin dialect by the acoustic analyses of the vowel formants and their Euclidean distances in the vowel space. The articulation points [ɨ, ɛ] of the Samcheok and Uljin dialects is very peculiar, from the standpoint of F1, [ɨ] is realized in a middle vowel position which is very low, and the articulation point of [ɛ] is raised and it is realized in a position close to [e]. There was no statistical difference in F1 and F2 of the vowels [e, ɛ, ɨ, ə] in the Samcheok dialect and there was no statistical difference in F1 of the vowels [e, ɛ, ɨ, ə] in the Uljin dialect, but there was a statistical difference in F2 of the vowels [e, ɛ, ɨ, ə] in the Uljin dialect. This fact indicates that the tongue heights of [e] and [ɛ], [ɨ] and [ə] are not different in both the Samcheok and Uljin dialects. As a result, the Euclidean distance of [e:ɛ], [ɨ:ə] are close enough in vowel proximity to demonstrate articulatory phonetic similarity, so we can see there is a vowel variation in progress in the Samcheok and Uljin dialect.
