ABSTRACT

Gyeongpodae(鏡浦臺) is a representative scenic spot in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, where a rich collection of narratives and literary works(詩文) has accumulated over a long period. The most prominent image emerging from these stories and writings is that of a ‘land where immortals(神仙) once roamed.’ From the Goryeo period through the late Joseon Dynasty, and even up to the present day, introductions to Gyeongpodae invariably mention the story of Youngrang or the Saseonrang (Four Hwarang). Given this tradition, the Gyeongpodae-bu(「鏡浦臺賦」), attributed to Yulgok Yi I(栗谷 李珥, 1536~1584), represents an exceptional case. In the Gyeongpodae-bu, the speaker enjoys the scenery finds Neo-Confucian values in it. He depicts Gyeongpodae as a place imbued with the footsteps of past Confucian predecessors, wholly unconnected to the realm of immortals. In essence, Gyeongpodae is perceived as a site where a Confucian scholar practices the cultivation of Neo-Confucian sensibilities. However, the image of ‘Gyeongpodae as a site for the cultivation of a Confucian scholar’ presented by this work was not subsequently inherited by later figures. This paper examines the Gyeongpodaebu, which offers a unique local perception that stands apart from the established literary tradition concerning Gyeongpodae.
