ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the coexistence of legendary fantasy and heroic narrative structures, as well as the meaning of the helper motif in the late Joseon classical novel Yi Hwajeon. The work reveals its legendary aspect through the appearance of a fox spirit and a ghostly figure, symbolizing the moral crisis of the era. The destruction of the monster represents the purification and restoration of ethical order. Meanwhile, the heroic aspect is shown in the protagonist Yi Hwa’s growth and moral completion through trials and supernatural assistance. The spirit of General Yi Yeobaek serves as a transcendent helper who grants legitimacy and ensures the fulfillment of justice. Integrating fantastic imagination and moral heroism, Yi Hwajeon exemplifies the narrative maturity and ethical complexity of late Joseon literature.
