ABSTRACT

The Gwangju Uprising of 1980 became the fuse for anti American sentiment. Since then, anti-Americanism in Korea has developed as a historical demand to correct the one-sided nature of the previous fifty years of US-ROK relations and the US oriented complex. The question of how to view the nation and how to position it within the global framework was also a major historical challenge for democratic forces at the time. The first to analyze Korea’s problems within this perspective was the Korean Japanese intellectual magazine “Hanyang.” This study examines the previously neglected anti-American novels of “Hanyang” to shed new light on the perspectives of anti-American sentiment in the 1980s.
