ABSTRACT

Until now the academic circles have regarded Maegeum(寐錦) founded on epigraph as a another name of Yisageum(尼師今) and Maripgan(麻立干) through the comparison of synonym and time for use of Samguksagi(三國史記) or Samgukyusa(三國遺事). However, many scholars have doubts on the origin and character of Maegeum. So this paper focuses on the naming method of title of king in old period and the diplomatic relationships between Goguryeo and Shilla. As a result, Maegeum is to compare with Louhan(樓寒) of Quan Qin(前秦). That is the name that translated Maripgan after Goguryeo submitted Shilla. But Maegeum did not mean that the man who wear silk clothes. According to Goguryeo epitaph located on Joongwong, at that time she had Goguryeo-oriented view of the world. Also she applied the tributary method experienced the diplomatic relationships between Goguryeo and China, she made Shilla as a tributary nation and gave clothes. In this process she made the term Maegeum(寐錦), Shilla Maegeum(新羅寐錦), and Dongi Maegeum(東夷寐錦). Therefore Maegeum is the term that indicates King of Shilla, but it is the term that made in Goguryeo.
