ABSTRACT

This thesis analyzes the changes in Chosun’s farm household economy and the living conditions of farm household in 1910s. The farm household economy in 1910s turned into a mixture of traditional distribution structure and colonial economic structure. This phenomenon had different impact on each class in agricultural economy. The well-off class in agricultural economy, usually landlords and wealthy farmers started to have surplus produce. Also, as the rice commercialization kicked in, they were able to increase their profit and reproduce in enlarged scale. From their profit, they purchased more land and transformed into colonial landlords which led to the expansion of colonial landlordly. The poor class in agricultural economy made small amount of income compared to the acreage they cultivated and in fact, were the purchaser of agricultural produce. In order to afford food, these people worked as laborers, street vendors and producers of simple items such as straw shoes. The middle class in agricultural economy earned money by engaging in high level cottage industry such as textile manufacturing, aside from profits they made by farming. However, due to the expansion of capitalism, their income began to decrease and eventually became a part of the poor class.
