AB - According to 開元釋敎錄, Myoung-hyo(明曉), a monk of Silla(新羅), persuaded Lee mu-cheom(李無諂) earnestly who was a translator monk in Tang(唐) to translate Amogha-pāśa’s Dharani sutra(不空羂索陀羅尼經). So it is known that 李無諂translated 不空羂索陀羅尼經 and 明曉came back to Silla with this.
李無諂modified the previous translation of 不空羂索陀羅尼經 with Dharani’s Chinese words and pronunciation in large part. Translators should have trouble to translate Sanscrit mantras and spell into Chinese, because people believed that the sound itself had meaning. People didn't satisfied with the previous translation.
李無諂was good at both Sanscrit and Chinese, that’s why 明曉quickly requested him to translate and he could come back to Silla with the new translation 不空羂索陀羅尼經.
不空羂索陀羅尼經 is different from the another Scriptures of Amogha-pāśa(不空羂索觀音), shows a view to see Buddha directly, and be born in the Western Paradise finally. Some people believed Avalokiteśvara(觀音) and they wished to see Avalokiteśvara as a mediator at that time in Silla.
More than that, the modified figures of Avalokiteśvara(變化觀音) began to create and we can see the stories about it. So it was introduced in those circumstances.
Besides, 明曉wrote Sāgara-mudrā-samādhi(海印三昧論). He expressed the point of 海印三昧論 is the Dharma-world Chart(法界圖) affected by Uisang(義相). 義相realized Dharani has the meaning of enchantment mantra, called that all dharma of dependen origination of Dharmadhatu(法界緣起) is ‘Dharani dharma(陀羅尼法)’, chose the form of the Dharma-world Chart joining Hwaeom(華嚴) Doctrine and practice fulfillment.
明曉also expressed that Dharani with important meaning of all the scriptures and a charitable deed of all the Buddhas belongs to sāgaramudrā-samādhi(海印三昧) and we can reach Buddha leaning on Dharani. This is the same as 不空羂索陀羅尼經 which is very emphatic on the power, recitation and effective value of Dharani itself.
We cannot find the case which is influenced by 不空羂索陀羅尼經.
However, as time goes by Hye-il(惠日) completed it added 1Vagga to 不空 羂索陀羅尼經. Therefore 明曉and 不空羂索陀羅尼經 was important in Silla.
