ABSTRACT

This paper examines the characteristics of the surname system in Chinese society and Korean society through two scholars’ viewpoints, that of Zheng Qiao(1104~1162) of the Song dynasty China and Yu Hyǒng Wǒn(1622~1673) of the Chosǒn dynasty Korea. The surname system of both societies had continuously developed based on ‘distinguishment’ of ‘ours’ and ‘yours’. However, in the case of the surname system in Chinese society, the custom which used Jiguan and surname together after the Song dynasty changed into one of ‘social system’, whereas the custom of using the name of homeland and surname together after the late Chosǒn dynasty did not develop into a social system but was persistently continued by the custom.
