ABSTRACT

This paper discussed the contents and characteristics of the amnesty and accompanying special favor conducted during King Mokjong and Hyeonjong’s era, Goryeo Dynasty. Originally, amnesties were mainly carried out with releasing prisoners and showing various grace in order to calm and harmonize public sentiment when there was a national celebration, Royal Ritual, or serious calamity. As a result, it was common for related issues to be considered, usually dealing with the field of Legal History or royal ceremony. However, during the reign of King Mokjong and Hyeonjong, many kinds of political events occurred in the inside and outside of the country. This caused the political situation very complicated. Naturally, there were more political considerations for amnesty than other times. Therefore, in this paper, I tried to explain this point thoroughly. Finally, this paper found that amnesties during the reign of King Mokjong and Hyeonjong were conducted more closely in connection with policies aimed at resolving the political challenges at hand ever before.
