AB - In the fifth month of 1012, the Khitan emperor demanded that Goryeo’s King Hyunjong visit the Khitan court and offer homage but Goryeo rejected the demand even though another Khitan invasion was expected. In the tenth month of 1014, the Khitan launched their third invasion of Goryeo, leading the Goryeo court to adopt a firm stance. In the fourth month of 1015, while successfully defending against Khitan attacks, the Goryeo court unexpectedly detained a Khitan envoy who had previously visited Goryeo. Following the incident Goryeo closed down the diplomatic channel between the two countries, severing further interactions.
This research aims to shed light on what led Goryeo, the weaker party in this diplomatic relationship, to take such high-risk actions by examining serial cases of detention of the Goryeo envoys by the Khitan in 1010. The full paper has more comprehensive examination of the detailed discussions and arguments based on the primary source data.
