ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the Monthly Report prepared by the Shanghai French Concession Authorities in the 1920s. First, it examines the monthly report’s role as a medium of information exchange. Specifically, the study investigates how many copies of the report were sent by France to Japan, what contents were included, what information France sought to obtain in exchange for providing the report, and whether the quality and quantity of information exchanged between France and Japan were balanced. Second, the study delves into the specific contents of the monthly report, particularly focusing on the activities of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea that garnered the attention of the French authorities. The report contains detailed information on the activities of the Provisional Government and on the various actions of Korean residents in Shanghai. This analysis examines the particular aspects of the Korean community in Shanghai that were of interest to the Shanghai French Concession Authorities.
