ABSTRACT

This thesis aims to analyze the ‘refugee-ism’ of survivors who experienced displacement during the Korean War. Specifically, it explores the characteristics and transformation of Korean society through the lives of North Korean refugees and displaced persons. The formation and evolution of refugee-ism are examined through emotions, memories, rights, and relationships, and in doing so, the thesis seeks to restore the significance of refugee-ism in contemporary Korean history. The experience of navigating between life and death is a fundamental aspect of refugee-ism, which gives rise to a deep longing for family and homeland. However, refugee-ism does not merely reflect the pain of the past; displaced people also undergo a reorganization of their refugee identity in their new places of settlement. The ‘Resettlement Project’ carried out by the Korean government and the United States aimed to settle displaced persons in rural areas, but it led to instability in land ownership and relegated displaced people to a refugee-ism that kept them in tenant farming. The refugee-ism of the displaced individuals was reshaped through social relations. Everyday discrimination was mitigated by interactions with local residents. Displaced people were able to experience support and solidarity within the community through churches or the Committee for Northern Korean, but their involvement was not merely passive or one-sided. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to reflect on how to coexist with migrants in the future by uncovering the role of refugee-ism in the formation of modern Korean society.
