AB - This study conducts an empirical examination of the “Ahn Jung-geun glass-plate photographs” preserved at the National Institute of Korean History, addressing not only Ahn Jung-geun but all individuals involved in the 1909 Harbin Incident. Previous research has concentrated mainly on Ahn’s individual image, leaving the actual dates and circumstances of the photographs insufficiently verified.
By reconstructing the institutional background in which the Korean History Compilation Committee produced and preserved these glass plates, and by analyzing records of the Residency-General, Russian investigative documents, and contemporary newspapers, this study identifies when and under what circumstances each photograph was taken. The findings show that the surviving photographs of Ahn include both those taken immediately after Russian interrogation and those produced later by the Japanese Consulate in Harbin, while the photographs of his associates were taken at different stages during their arrest and transfer to Lüshun. The study further suggests that the glass-plate negatives were created as part of the Committee’s materials-gathering process for the compilation of The Modern History of Joseon.
By clarifying the origins and chronology of these materials, this study rectifies long-standing inconsistencies and provides a more accurate understanding of all actors involved in the Harbin Incident.
