ABSTRACT

'Hyo' is generally called the base of all acts. Therefore 'Hyo' is described as an absolute and unconditional moral duty in textbook of「Moral」&「Ethics」of elementary and junior schools. But almost brief description is lack of the theoretical justification rationale. So this paper is to study to clear the ethical grounds of 'Hyo' duty through as follows : 1) to reinterpret 'Hyo' with virtue ethics, care ethics, philosophical anthropology, social biology as well as confucianism. The origin of 'Hyo' can be understood in both moral sentiment and rational universal law. This is similar to the way of western ethics that explains the origin of moral act with feeling and reason. ; 2) to draw the nature of 'Hyo' duty as perfect and universal duty. ; 3) to explore the possibility of 'Hyo' ethics as universal ethics furthermore. The meaning of universal ethics is different according to the perspective. For survival and prosperity in global age, we need new universal ethics forward more comprehensive ideas and universal values. In this context, I try to draw the possibility of 'Hyo' ethics as universal ethics. The ethical grounds of 'Hyo' duty can be helpful to establish 'Hyo' ethics as universal ethics as follows : 1) the origin of 'Hyo' duty that is related with moral sentiment and universal moral law can be acceptable with Aristoteles' virtue ethics and D. Hume's feeling ethics, and I. Kant's duty ethics. ; 2) 'Hyo' duty provides us the comprehensive and universal perspective that can complement the main theories among Oriental and Western ethics.
