ABSTRACT

There has been increase in numbers of foreign students in Korean graduate school due to the globalization. Among them, Chinese students account for more than 50%. It has significant meaning to explore how their and filial piety are working in Korea in which filial piety culture and Confucianism are deeply rooted. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the filial piety consciousness of Chinese students who are attending graduate school in Korea. To do this, 7 Chinese students who are attending graduate school in Korea are selected and in-depth interview was conductive from March 2015 to May 2015. The contents of the interview has been analyzed being categorized by filial duty of honor, filial duty of affection, filial duty of support and filial duty of success. The results are as follows. First of all, regarding to filial duty of honor, Chinese graduate school students were trying to show respect and honor toward their parents and thinking that not causing anxiety to their parents is the most important part of piety duty. Second, concerning filial duty of affection, even though they were living apart from their parents, their affection toward their parents do not change and they were keeping in contact with their parents via E-mail, messenger and display phone. However, they thought that their affection level is lower than that of their parents. Thirdly, in terms of filial duty of support, when their parents get older or sick, they said that they will support their parents. They said that they do not understand why Koreans are sending their parents to the nursing homes these days. Finally, with regard to filial duty of success, they want to achieve degree as soon as possible to be a proud and helpful offspring of their parents. Such results above gave opportunity to explore the filial piety consciousness of Chinese students in Korea graduate school and it is expected to give understanding of foreign students’ filial piety consciousness as well as provide academic resources.
