ABSTRACT

We usually say the combination of Yin (音, sound) and Yue (樂, playing) as YinYue(音樂, music), but Ancient Chinese classics distinguished between Yin and Yue, and further added Sheng (聲, voice ) to that. This is significantly different from what we today think of music. Music usually refers to Yin in the previous way of thinking. Yin contained all of poetry, song, and dance. It sometimes contained formative elements such as painting, sculpture, and architecture, so it could be philosophy of integrated arts. However, this study could not properly discuss all of this. It aims to discuss the basics of traditional music theories, so it touches only on theories of traditional Korean music. In particular, it focuses on the Record of Music in the Book of Rites to discuss musical theories from the perspective of harmony. Since harmony is the most important in a community, this study aims to reveal that the harmony, pursued by music, and the harmony hoped for by a community could communicate with each other. That harmony is the filial piety(HYO) in the parents-children relationship, loyalty in the monarch-subject relationship, and the respect and love in the siblings relationship. The harmony was essential for a community, so it is examined in a big framework of cultivation of human nature. The most important factor in the cultivation of human nature is the interpersonal relationship, so this is examined from the total perspective of harmony. In other words, this study intends to prove that the harmony theory of music was essential to the harmony of a community.
