The Meaning of Filial Piety(Hyo: 孝) as Confucian Spirituality and Its Implications for Welfare

ABSTRACT

This article reviews the implication for welfare of filial piety(Hyo: 孝) as Confucian understandings by focusing on the characteristics of filial piety as a Confucian Spirituality. First, the meaning of filial piety was examined based on literal meaning of Chinese characters and English letters and the contents of filial piety was analyzed with 12 virtue and 6 principles of human ethics. Secondly, The meaning of confucian spirituality was presented as follows: view on life and death, religious character as practical norms, spiritual development through benevolence-ren(仁), humanity by reciprocity-shu(恕), and of self-cultivation of virtue(德). Thirdly, The implication of spiritual welfare was suggested under the four sub-topics of ideal vision of family relationship, familism, care for elders, and spiritual development of youth. Finally, the filial piety was interpreted as having ambivalent quality and its discussion was needed in relation to welfare. This study expected to contribute to reaffirm the meaning of filial piety as Confucian spirituality.
