ABSTRACT

In the history of Song dynasty lasting 300 years, Song was often invaded by northern ethnic groups, especially aggressive Liao dynasty. Under the circumstances, there were many armed clashes in the northern territory of Song and the power of Song was gradually weakened. When Song was faced with the situation that destroying Liao in military conquest had no possibility, SongーZhenーZong, the emperor of Song, reached a peace agreement with Liao. Even though the “Chan Yuan Zhi Meng”, the peace agreement between Song and Liao, was very dishonorable and unfavorable for Song dynasty, it allowed Song to enjoy 120 years of peaceful period, recovery of national power and wellーbeing of all people in Song dynasty. The agreement stipulated that the envoys should be accredited to have a mutual communication when Song and Liao have national events. Most of the envoys accredited by Song dynasty were high ranking officials. All those officials were experts in political affairs, and also had very high literary culture. On the way to Liao, those envoys were highly impressed and inspired by wonderful scenery, and wrote a lot of poetry with great emotion. This kind of poetry is called “ShiーLiaoーShi”, which means the poetry written by the envoy to Liao dynasty. Based on these understandings, some questions are come across in my mind. The questions are as below; what situation made the envoys write those poems? What route and itinerary did those envoys take? Where are those traces of stations at present? Those questions are tried to be examined in this study using related historical materials, illustrated books, articles and my personal understanding of China’s geography. Through examining the old route and the geographical designations shown in the “ShiーLiaoーShi”, the readers of this study can imagine tough range of mountains, spacious desserts, desolate old station structures and tough itinerary. This study will also help the readers understand more about the situation mentioned in the “ShiーLiaoーShi” written a thousand years ago.
