ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the concept of self is constructed through three representative models of cognitive scientific explanation: symbolism, connectionism, and recently proposed embodiment theory. The description of the self is very diverse not only in philosophy but also in cognitive science, and there is no consensus on how to approach the problem of self. The lack of consent means that the problem of self is a multi-dimensional problem that cannot be solved only by one level of explanation or theory. This study examines the empirical scientific studies that seem to have the implication that the self can be reduced or eliminated to the physical basis of the brain. On the other hand, This study examines the way in which information is represented in the recent explanatory model of cognitive science. Representation in the explanatory model of cognitive science is also important in dealing with the self, because it is used in contexts involving agents. In conclusion, the self-concept can be extended beyond the traditional self-basis such as the individuality of the body or the identity of the memory. In order to elucidate the self, it is necessary to go beyond the conscious side of the existing experiential scientific and philosophical analysis, Research is needed.
