ABSTRACT

This study attempts to examine the effects of reading practice on speech rate and pause realization in the utterances produced by Korean English Learners. To answer this research question, this study used new materials which have never been exposed to the participants and were totally different from the materials used for reading practice. The results showed that speech rate and articulation rate of the post-practice utterances were faster than those of the pre-practice utterances. It implies that reading practice improved the participants’ fluency even in the new materials. The finding that pause frequency increased in post-practice utterances tells us that reading practice helped to enhance the power of delivery. The shortened average pause duration exhibited the improvement of fluency. From the perspective of pause location, pause duration occurring within the utterance was three times longer than pause duration occurring at the end of utterance, and the percentage of pause duration within the utterance was higher by 7% in Korean English learners than in English native speakers. The overall results of this study showed that reading practice has positive effects on the newly presented materials including the materials directly used for reading practice. This suggests that reading practice is a practical and effective strategy that Korean English learners can utilize to improve English pronunciation skills.
