ABSTRACT

This paper defines a city as a spatial device that locally manages entropy. This paper attempts to reconstruct the concept of a city necessary to faithfully fulfil the demands of the times of transition to a sustainable city. First, the discussion starts with a brief introduction to entropy, a review of existing studies on urban entropy, and a simple thought experiment to infer how changes in the human settlement system have managed entropy. Afterwards, we look at the changes in outline by looking at the process of human urbanization, especially the historical experience of modern cities. Finally, the developmentalist urbanization of South Korea is outlined with the concept of an entropy management device, and a theoretical review of its characteristics and structure is carried out. This study diagnoses the entropy characteristics of individual cities called apartment urbanization in Korea's inter-city division of labour.
