ABSTRACT

Medical treatments practiced in non-official circles were based on experience. Traditional Korean medical prescriptions were provided. Most of them were the administration of medicine prepared with medicinal herbs and the treatment of injuries. The terms in traditional medicine have been called by different names in different times. Medical books were published centering on Korean medicine during the Joseon Dynasty. These medical books describe folk prescriptions, mainly single remedies that use one or two ingredients. Collection of Korean Medicine, Classified Compilation of Medical Prescriptions, Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine, and Essays on Rural Life and Economy describe folk prescriptions. Under Japanese rule, newspapers introduced remedies that people use to treat diseases that occur in everyday life by the name of popular remedies or folk remedies. Traditional single remedies and newly emerging drugs and methods were introduced as well as treatment methods.
