ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of childrearing calling—what constitutes the construct—in the Korean sociocultural context. The data were collected with purposive sampling, and 14 participants (8 women, 6 men) were recruited with the consideration of a proper age range. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that six themes of childrearing calling were drawn: ‘the characters and qualifications of parents’, ‘parental identity’, ‘destiny and responsibility’, ‘beliefs and orientation’, ‘passion and dedication’, and ‘meaningful growth of the parent and child.’ These themes were in line with the concepts of the childrearing calling discovered in the Western culture. New themes in Korean context that were differentiated from the Western findings were ‘the characters and qualifications of parents’ and ‘meaningful growth of the parent and child’. The theme ‘Destiny and responsibility’ was similar with the Western concept; however, the connotated intention of the theme was different in Korean context. This study expands the understanding of childrearing calling in Korea, and the results will be useful for future research on childrearing calling.
