ABSTRACT

Towards the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, the defense of the northern border collapsed rapidly due to three main reasons. Firstly, the Song Dynasty's complacent response to diplomatic agreements and disputes worsened relations with the Jin Dynasty, yet they failed to promptly devise countermeasures. The ambiguously drafted agreements between the Song and Jin Dynasties were interpreted in favor of the Jin due to the Song's military incompetence. The Song Dynasty's attempts to reclaim lost benefits politically, rather than militarily, provoked the Jin, leading to the Song-Jin War. Secondly, with the recovery of the Yan-Yun region, the border was readjusted, and the old defense line was dismantled, but the construction of a new defense line failed. As the border moved northward, the Song Dynasty hastily dismantled the old defense line before the new one was fully established, allowing the Jin to invade through the collapsed old defense line. Lastly, relying on mercenary groups composed of border residents rather than regular troops for the defense of the northern border effectively disbanded the northern border defense forces. These mercenary groups prioritized their survival and interests, and when the Song-Jin War broke out, they led the invasion of the Song for the Jin. Thus, the Jin succeeded in invading the Song by bypassing the old defense line with the help of those familiar with the Song's terrain and internal affairs.
